Heaven and Earth--The Facts Behind the Story
This film by Oliver Stone is based on the book When Heaven and Earth Changed Places by Vietnamese author Le Ly Hayslip. It tells the compelling story of her odyssey from childhood on a rural rice farm to work as a part-time prostitute in Danang to marriage to an American Marine and later life as a wife and mother in the United States.
Details were spelled out in Hayslip's book. We merely referred to them and helped to create characters and locations as called for in Oliver Stone's brilliant adaptation. It was, however, a sprawling, monumental effort that covered about three decades of Vietnamese history from the French occupation in the 1950's through the fall of Saigon to the North Vietnamese in 1975 and including the influx of Vietnamese refugees to the United States.
