In June of 2005, my friend actor Gary Sinise invited me to emcee "Rock and Remember" in Chicago. It was a weird request as I've never had anything to do with a rock and roll show, but Gary is a good friend and a genuine American patriot, so I told him to book it and made arrangements to head for The Windy City. The event was a fund-raiser for the Pentagon Memorial Fund, which is raising cash to build a permanent memorial near the Pentagon for the people who died in the September 11, 2001 attack on that building. Gary's band - The Lt. Dan Band featuring Vietnam Vet Kimo Williams - has been touring military bases around the world entertaining our troops, but I had never heard them play in person. They are terrific and Gary is as good thumping a bass as he is on camera. It was quite a thrill to reunite with him in public and discover that he's taken all I taught him in training for "Forrest Gump" to heart.
